Drug abuse and addiction is a major problem in the United States. The current treatment options only substitute the drug of abuse with a similar compound but this type of treatment does not address the underlying cellular behaviors. Studies have shown that M5 muscarinic receptor locations and functions are involved in the reward pathway that is also involved in drug abuse and addiction. A selective M5 muscarinic receptor antagonist could allow for better treatment options than currently available, however such a compound has yet to be identified. An introductory step in the form of a screening method to identify possible compounds as M5 muscarinic receptor antagonists has been developed and testing of several compounds has ensued. The screening method has been able to characterize compounds as inhibitors of acetylcholine binding at M5 muscarinic receptors or inactive at the M5 receptor binding site.
