Introduction Each year institutions of higher education throughout North America invest tens of thousands of dollars developing and conducting surveys to determine the reasons why students attend summer session. Some institutions employ outside firms, some employ research faculty, others expect Summer Session staff to devote many hours of their time to develop an instrument able to gather this data. Each institution develops its own survey instrument. Instruments from different institutions sometimes contain similar items but more frequently do not. Few, if any, of these instruments are tested for their validity and reliability.
